Pudge is typically played in pubs as a mid hero, but he's actually quite capable as a support hero.
When you play him as a core or mid hero, he's very weak in the late game because his damage and carry potential don't scale much, unless you continuously land god tier hooks.
Support pudge, on the other hand, can scale decently due to a BKB piercing 3 sec stun, positioning based ability, including defensive and offensive, and good roaming potential, though weak sustain.
The important thing is to get a fast level 2 because it allows you to hook as well as rot to chase. Once you have 2 you are happy to participate in ganks.
For items you need tranquils for hp regen and armor, and you need a mana source, either bottle or soul ring, later items depending on the situation.
